Packetized Energy brought me in to transform their existing brand in preparation for acquisition. With cutting edge technology, laudable patents, and established utilities customers, the challenge was to build a design system to accommodate physical and software products. Further, the company couldn’t hide behind its cool tech. It needed to tell a human story about its inventive founders and their dream of a decarbonized future.
SOLUTION
While the team perfected their grid energy algorithms, I got to know the leadership team, studied the market, tinkered with the tech, and dove into the desires of their prospects. Together we developed a design system that evolved existing communication standards including refinements to the identity, color palette, iconography, and UX. The result was recognizable but refined, built on a story of hope for the future through innovation and drive.
RESULTS
Following our work together, Packetized Energy scaled its operations and was acquired by EnergyHub – the industry-leading provider of distributed energy resource management solutions. Today they continue to hone their software systems to support utilities to decarbonize.

IDENTITY REFRESH
The inspiration for the new brand identity was based on a visualization of the digital packets that Packetized Energy’s software sends to the cloud to help utilities predict energy fluctuations.
PACKAGING
The inspiration for the Mello® product packaging and supporting app was the toy-like quality of the product itself and a focus on simplicity.
